Harlem based Canadian Jessamyn Rodriguez created a 9-month training program for low-income, minority and immigrant women to become artisanal bakers with Hot Bread Kitchen (HBK). Students also gain additional skills throughout the course – English, maths, science and job readiness – and graduates tend to earn 70% more, on average, than they did before training. HBK Incubates is an affiliate scheme for emerging food businesses that offers 3,000 square foot of shared commercial kitchen and a business support program, along with access to HBK’s network of local partners. The program has already helped 120 businesses, creating 200 new jobs in the process.
